Set Up Your Company in Umm Al Quwain: Free Zone and Mainland, with Full Guidance
Umm Al Quwain, often shortened to UAQ, is the value champion of the UAE for company setup. It gives you the same federal benefits as Dubai, including 100% foreign ownership, 0% personal income tax, and full profit repatriation, but at one of the lowest all-in costs in the country. A UAQ free zone licence can start from around AED 5,500, and the emirate sits about 45 minutes from Dubai along the E311.
When people search for business setup in Umm Al Quwain, they usually weigh two routes. The first is the Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone (UAQ FTZ), a Designated Free Zone whose packages bundle the licence with a co-working desk, bank-account support and often a visa. The LYTE package starts from AED 5,500 with no visa, the START package from around AED 12,500 with one visa, and a General Trading licence from AED 7,000 with the price locked for three years. It suits freelancers, consultants, e-commerce sellers on Amazon and Noon, and traders.
The second route is a UAQ mainland company, licensed by the UAQ Department of Economic Development (DED). A mainland licence lets you trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE, open shops, and bid for government contracts, which a free zone company cannot do without a distributor or branch. Since the 2021 reform, most mainland activities also allow 100% foreign ownership.
UAQ wins on bundled value rather than the bare licence price. Ajman has a slightly lower headline licence, but UAQ usually matches or beats it once a visa, co-working desk and setup support are included, and several packages lock the price for three years. The emirate also has a working port, Ahmed Bin Rashid Port, and some of the cheapest industrial land in the UAE from about AED 1.75 per square foot. The trade-offs are a smaller ecosystem and some banking friction, which we cover honestly below. The goal of this guide is simple: help you pick the right UAQ setup for your real plans, not just the lowest number.
