Setup Your Freezone Company in Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah with Full Guidance

A free zone is an area of the UAE with its own licensing authority and its own rules. There are more than 45 free zones across the seven emirates, and each one licenses its own list of business activities. A free zone company gives you 100% foreign ownership with no local partner, lets you move all your profits and capital out of the UAE, and pays no personal income tax. You can also get residence visas for yourself and your staff, and sponsor your family.

Corporate tax is 9% on profit above AED 375,000. Qualifying free zone income can be taxed at 0%, but only if the company meets the conditions, such as real activity in the zone and audited accounts. Every zone asks for an office, but a flexi-desk is usually enough for the licence and your first visas. Setup starts from AED 4,888 for a licence in Ajman, and most licences are issued in 3 to 12 working days.

Each free zone suits different kinds of business. In Dubai, the main zones are DMCC, DAFZA, IFZA, Meydan and Dubai South. Sharjah has SHAMS and SPC, Ras Al Khaimah has RAKEZ, and Ajman has Ajman Free Zone. The right choice depends on your activity, your budget and how many visas you need. We compare the zones for you, then handle the whole setup, from the trade licence to your visas, and help you open your bank account.

Freezone UAE company benefits that matters most. Built for global growth and UAE Full Access

Repatriation and Currency Freedom: Move profits and capital freely, with no currency controls or transfer restrictions.
Streamlined Setup & Remote Incorporation: Use digital portals, e‑signatures and remote verification in many zones to set up your company from abroad before relocating.

The Difference

Freezone vs Mainland Companies in UAE

Here’s a simple breakdown showing the difference between Freezone and Mainland companies side by side. This section highlights why many founders, digital businesses, and global entrepreneurs prefer Freezones - faster setup, lower costs, and full ownership - while still understanding the limitations compared to Mainland.

Freezone

What it does
Freezone companies operate with full foreign ownership and are built for international markets, online businesses, and remote-friendly teams. They offer faster setup, lower office requirements, and fewer day-to-day obligations.
Licence
You get your licence from the Freezone Authority you choose. Each zone offers its own set of activities — consulting, digital services, media, trading, e-commerce, IT, and more.
Banking
Freezone companies can open UAE bank accounts easily although it takes some time.
Office
Flexi-desk or shared office options are usually enough to register the company, keeping office costs low and setup simple.
Taxes & compliance
0% corporate tax for qualifying Freezone income. VAT applies only to relevant activities. Compliance remains straightforward.
Best for
Best suited for digital businesses, global founders, freelancers, trading companies, and startups looking for easy setup, predictable costs, and full ownership — without needing a big office or local trading.
Cost (First year)
12,800 AED
Renewal Cost
9,920 AED/year
*80% of the first year cost.
Visa

For additional visa it will cost 4000-5000 AED for each visa.

Mainland

What it does
Mainland companies are built for full access to the UAE onshore market. They can trade directly with consumers and companies across the Emirates, bid for certain government contracts and run customer‑facing locations like shops.
Licence
Issued by Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Covers retail, services, contracting, and other onshore activities. Activity lists are broad and suited to on‑ground operations
Banking
Banks review mainland and free zone companies the same way: by activity, ownership and source of funds.
Office
A physical office is mandatory. In Dubai, that usually means a minimum of around 200 sq ft per licence.
Taxes & compliance
VAT applies (5% on taxable supplies) as usual. Corporate Tax of 9% applies on profits above AED 375k (As of now 2026)
Best for
Best for businesses that depend on direct onshore sales and walk‑in customers, such as retail, healthcare, F&B, maintenance services or companies bidding for local tenders and large UAE‑based contracts.
(First year) Cost
18,200 AED
Renewal Cost
15,000 AED/year

Frequently asked questions

Can a free zone company trade with clients on the UAE mainland?
chevron down icon
Yes, but with structure. A free zone company can provide services to mainland clients or sell goods through approved channels, but direct retail trading and some regulated activities generally require either:

• appointing a mainland distributor / commercial agent, or

• opening a mainland branch or LLC that holds the onshore contracts.
We explain options based on your exact model so you stay compliant.
Do I get a UAE residence visa with a free zone company?
chevron down icon
Most free zone licences allow visas for shareholders and employees, subject to package and office type. The number of visas linked to your company depends on the zone and the size of your leased space. We recommend packages that match your current and near‑term hiring plan.
How long does it take to get a free zone licence?
chevron down icon
If your documents are in order and the activity is straightforward, initial approval can be issued within a few days and your licence within 4-7 days. Visas and bank accounts add more time (almost 10 days). Complex regulated activities naturally take longer.
What documents do I need to start a Freezone company?
chevron down icon
Usually your passport copy, a photo, business activity list, and bank statement or any utility bill for country residence proof.
Do I need to visit the UAE to open a Freezone company?
chevron down icon
Most Freezones allow full remote setup. You only need to visit later if you're applying for a UAE residency visa. You've to plan for at-least 10 day trip.
Do I need an office to start a Freezone company?
chevron down icon
A physical office is not needed. A flexi-desk or coworking space from the Freezone is enough for licensing and visa eligibility.
Can Freezone companies open UAE bank accounts?
chevron down icon
Yes. All Freezone companies can open accounts, as long as KYC requirements are met. We'll help you to open your corporate bank account and even your personal bank account.
Is it harder for Freezone companies to open a bank account?
chevron down icon
Not harder, but banks may take more time to review compared to mainland. Good documentation helps.
Can I have multiple business activities under one free zone company?
chevron down icon
Yes, most authorities allow you to combine several related activities under one licence, subject to their list and category rules. Where combinations are not allowed, we help you structure the activities across separate licences or clarify what is realistically possible.
What if I am currently employed in the UAE? Can I still open a free zone company?
chevron down icon
Yes, but you may need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your existing employer depending on your visa status and the authority’s rules. We review your current employment contract, visa and sponsor details to structure this correctly.
How much does a Freezone visa cost?
chevron down icon
Each extra visa costs about AED 4,000 to 5,000, depending on the free zone. This covers the entry permit, medical test and Emirates ID.
Can I sponsor my family with a Freezone visa?
chevron down icon
Yes. Once your residence visa is issued, you can sponsor your spouse, children, and parents (under certain rules). Although, security deposit is required around 2000 AED for each family members. When you leave UAE with your family then you'll get the refund.
What is the cheapest Freezone in the UAE?
chevron down icon
Ajman is the cheapest. Our Ajman (ANFZ) package costs AED 4,888 for the licence only, or AED 10,800 with one residence visa. In Sharjah, SRTI Park and SPC start from about AED 5,500 for the licence only.
Can I upgrade from a free zone to a mainland structure later?
chevron down icon
Yes. Many businesses start in a free zone to test the market, then open a mainland branch or new mainland company once onshore demand grows. We plan this path with you so contracts, branding and banking continue smoothly.
Are free zone companies suitable for holding intellectual property or shares in other entities?
chevron down icon
Several authorities offer holding / SPV structures for IP or equity holdings. The right choice depends on where your operating companies sit, your investors’ preferences and tax considerations in other countries. We can coordinate with your advisors to set this up correctly.
What documents do I need as an individual shareholder for Freezone Business Setup?
chevron down icon
These are the documents required for an individual share holder.

1. Passport Copies.
2. Digital Shareholder photo in plain background.
3. Bank Statement or any utility bill for country residence proof.

That's it

How much does it cost to set up a free zone company in Dubai in 2026?
chevron down icon
With one residence visa, a Dubai free zone company costs from AED 21,050 at Meydan and AED 21,400 at IFZA. The licence alone, without a visa, starts at AED 12,500 at Meydan and AED 12,900 at IFZA. If Dubai is not a must, Ajman starts at AED 4,888 and SHAMS in Sharjah at AED 6,885. Our prices include VAT and government fees. See the current offer in the price section above.
Do free zone companies pay corporate tax in the UAE?
chevron down icon
Yes, unless they qualify for 0%. Every free zone company must register for corporate tax. Profit above AED 375,000 is taxed at 9%. The 0% rate is not automatic: it applies only to qualifying income of a Qualifying Free Zone Person that keeps real substance in the zone, meets the activity rules and has audited accounts. It is checked again every tax year.
How much does it cost to renew a free zone licence each year?
chevron down icon
It depends on the zone and how many visas are on the licence. Our current renewal prices are about AED 9,900 for Ajman (ANFZ), AED 10,000 for SHAMS and AED 18,000 for IFZA. For other zones, the renewal cost is confirmed in your written quote before you pay anything.
What is the difference between an FZE, an FZCO and an FZ-LLC?
chevron down icon
They are all free zone companies. The name tells you how many owners it has: an FZE (Free Zone Establishment) has one shareholder, and an FZCO (Free Zone Company) or FZ-LLC has two or more. Which name you get depends on the free zone. Read more in our guide to FZE vs FZCO vs branch.
Is SHAMS a Dubai free zone?
chevron down icon
No. SHAMS (Sharjah Media City) is in Sharjah. It costs less than the Dubai free zones, from AED 6,885 for the licence only, and a Sharjah licence works well for businesses that serve clients abroad or online.
Do I need a local UAE partner to own a free zone company?
chevron down icon
No. Free zone companies allow 100% foreign ownership. You can own and control the whole company yourself, alone or with partners from any country, with no local sponsor.
Is there a minimum share capital for a free zone company?
chevron down icon
Most free zones set no fixed minimum, or accept a small declared amount. A few zones still name a figure, and the rules change, so we confirm the current requirement for your zone before you apply. Capital is rarely what decides between zones; your activity, visas and office options matter more.
Does my free zone company need an annual audit?
chevron down icon
It depends on your tax status and your zone. If you want the 0% free zone tax rate, you need audited financial statements every year, whatever your revenue. Many free zones, such as DMCC, also ask for audited accounts to renew the licence. Companies with revenue above AED 50 million must be audited in any case.
How many employee visas can a free zone company get?
chevron down icon
It depends on your package and office size. Most zones allow about one visa for every 9 square metres of office space, and a flexi-desk package covers a small number. Some zones, such as SHAMS and DMCC, offer higher or unlimited quotas with a full office. Your share capital does not change the visa quota.
Does it matter which free zone I choose for my business?
chevron down icon
Yes, but price is rarely the main reason. What matters most is whether the zone licenses your exact activity, how many visas you need, the office options and, if you trade goods, whether the zone has VAT Designated Zone status. Meydan, IFZA, SHAMS and SPC, for example, do not have that status.
Is everything in a free zone VAT-free?
chevron down icon
No. You must register for VAT once your taxable sales pass AED 375,000 a year, and you can register voluntarily from AED 187,500. Services are charged 5% VAT in every free zone. Only goods inside a VAT Designated Zone, such as JAFZA or DAFZA, get special VAT treatment.
Can I take all my profits out of the UAE?
chevron down icon
Yes. The UAE has no currency controls, so a free zone company can send 100% of its profits and capital abroad.
Can I own more than one free zone company?
chevron down icon
Yes. There is no limit on how many companies one person can own, and each real company has its own AED 375,000 band taxed at 0%. But if one business is split into several companies only to claim extra tax relief, the tax authority can treat them as one company.
How do I close a free zone company?
chevron down icon
You have to liquidate it formally. Letting the licence expire does not close the company: fines build up every month, visa renewals get blocked and you can face a travel ban. A proper closure cancels the visas and deregisters the company from VAT and corporate tax. In most free zones it takes about 4 to 9 weeks.
